PITTSFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - The state Corrections Department is spending millions on mandatory overtime due to a shortage of guards at the state's only prison for women. Amber Dotson tells the Detroit Free Press that she regularly works 12 hours or more. She says "it really wears you out." Her base salary is $52,000 a year, but she was paid $44,000 by the end of July. Years ago, male guards at the Huron Valley women's prison in Washtenaw County sexually assaulted inmates. Only female guards now work in the housing units. But the state is having a hard time filling vacancies. Overtime has cost $12.4 million in the last two years. The federal government is suing the state, accusing the Corrections Department of violating the rights of female guards. Both sides are trying to reach a settlement. --- Information from: Detroit Free Press, http://www.freep.com
