DETROIT (AP) - A Detroit police officer has died after being struck earlier this month by a speeding SUV while assisting with crowd and traffic control at a neighborhood event. Police Chief James Craig announced Officer Fadi Shukur's death Wednesday. The 30-year-old Shukur had been hospitalized after being struck Aug. 4 on the city's west side. The driver drove away. Charges against 19-year-old Jonathan David Cole of Belleville have been upgraded to second-degree murder and reckless driving causing death. Cole surrendered to police hours after Shukur was hit. He initially was charged with reckless driving and failure to stop at the scene of a crash. Mayor Mike Duggan said Shukur's death is a reminder of the "many dangers men and women of the Detroit Police Department face."
