Friday night’s Class A district final between Hartland and South Lyon East saw East take a 6-0 lead and hold Hartland scoreless for most of the first quarter. Then, Hartland coach Don Palmer made some adjustments and the Eagles soared after that, scoring the next 19 points and going on to a 44-3 run before earning their third district title in four seasons with a 61-21 win.

Whitney Sollom had one of her best games of the season, recording another triple double with 18 points, 10 rebounds and 10 blocks. Overall, the Eagles have won seven district titles in Palmer’s nine years as coach. The Eagles take on Dexter, which beat Ann Arbor Pioneer 27-23 last night, in Tuesday’s Class A regional semifinal at Walled Lake Western.

The boys regular season, delayed a day by Thursday’s snow storm, came to an end last night. Howell, whose game with Northville was moved to Parker Middle School by the girls district, beat the Mustangs for the first time in three tries this season. It took a pair of overtimes, but the Highlanders won 68-69. Howell was led by Josh Palo’s 14 points.

Elsewhere, Grand Blanc won the KLAA boys title by beating Novi 69-64, Brighton edged Livonia Franklin 47-46 and Hartland edged Salem 61-56. The state tournament for the boys begins on Monday.

In wrestling, Hartland’s Kyle Kantola, at 125 pounds, and River Shettler at 160, will wrestle for state titles this afternoon at Ford Field. A total of 13 county wrestlers, seven of them from Brighton, placed in the top eight and earned all-state honors.

In bowling, the Brighton girls team did not make it out of the qualifying round in Friday’s state team championships. The individual state finals will be held today.

Turning to hockey, Hartland and Brighton will try to win regional titles today. Hartland will play host to West Bloomfield at 5 p.m. this afternoon. Coach Rick Gadwa’s team is shooting for its sixth consecutive regional title.

At Howell, Brighton takes on Orchard Lake St. Mary’s in a Division 1 regional final that figures to be another low-scoring game between two of the state’s top teams. The low ceiling at Grand Oaks adds an interesting dimension to tonight’s 7 p.m. matchup.

The Bulldogs are going for their seventh regional title in a row.
