Brighton Woman Sentenced In Bicyclist's Death
August 29, 2017
Sentencing has been handed down to a Brighton woman involved in a crash that left a bicyclist dead.
56-year-old Darlene Joyce Scheffler was recently sentenced to a year of probation and five days of community service. She pleaded guilty in July to a misdemeanor of operating with the presence of a controlled substance. The charge stems from the December 2016 incident that occurred across the street from the St. Joseph Mercy Brighton Medical Center. Authorities say 37-year-old Bryce Douglas Caudell rode his bicycle across the lanes of traffic and was hit by an oncoming PT Cruiser, driven by Scheffler. He was declared dead at the scene.
Witnesses say Caudell appeared to come out of nowhere with conditions that were dark and rainy. State Police originally did not anticipate any charges against Scheffler, although toxicology tests were still pending at the time of that statement. It was later discovered that Scheffler had THC, the active ingredient in marijuana, in her system. (DK)
