Improvements to a popular path in Lyon Township have been approved by officials.

At their March meeting, the Lyon Township Board of Trustees considered bids for the resurfacing of a large portion of the Huron Valley Trail. This Huron Valley Trail Resurfacing Phase 2 project includes the pulverizing and paving of approximately 8,130 lineal feet of the Trail, including detectable warning surfaces at major intersections between Milford Trail and north of Pontiac Trail. According to a memo in the Board’s agenda packet, the project also includes work on 800 feet of the trail from Milford Road west into Atchinson Park.

The Township put the project out to bid and received four in return. A low bid around $275,000 was received by Birmingham Sealcoat, but they later withdrew that offer due to an error in their submittal. The next low bidder was Asphalt Specialists Inc., with a bid just over $420,000. Supervisor John Dolan noted they had budgeted half-a-million dollars for the project, and there was a feeling on the Board that with the rising costs of materials, the time to do it is now or never. They approved awarding the bid to ASI for a total amount of their bid plus a 15% contingency. The project will also receive $75,000 in funding from a Ralph C. Wilson Maintenance Grant.
