Catholic Central Beats Brighton for State Division 1 Hockey Crown
March 13, 2022
Novi Detroit Catholic Central defeated a determined but outmanned Brighton Bulldogs team 5-1 Saturday night for the Division I state hockey title. It was the Shamrocks' 4th state crown in the last 7 years. The Bulldogs were making their eighth appearance in the state championship game but couldn't overcome the scoring punch of Catholic Central.
After a scoreless first period, Brighton opened the scoring in the second period with a backhand shot by Cameron Duffany, assisted by Nick Baker and Lane Petit. But CC quickly responded and overall ended up outshooting the Bulldogs 38-18 for the game, played at the USA Hockey Arena in Plymouth.
The Bulldogs are coached by Kurt Kivisto, who is in his second year at the helm. Although it was a disappointing loss, the Bulldogs finished a very successful 2021-22 season with 22 wins, 6 losses and one tie. Brighton is itself somewhat of a hockey power, having won state Division I championships in 2006, '12, '13, '17 and '18.
