Howell is slight favorite over Brighton to win Hartland district title
February 26, 2023
CLASS A HARTLAND GIRLS DISTRICT
Howell (16-6) caught fire too late to win the KLAA East Division crown, but its stellar play is just in time to win a Class A district title. It won’t be easy. Brighton is smarting from a late-season slump and close loss to Howell.
Hartland (12-10) is the defending champion but has struggled with a whole new team, new coach and a critical injury. Here is how the district stakes up and the odds for each team to win it.
HOWELL (16-6)
Getting solid play from Molly Deurloo and Sophie Daugard is a given. What makes the Highlanders so dangerous is the emergence of freshman Gabby Piepho. She’s been good all season, but now she knows how to take over games. Howell is ranked fourth in the Detroit News North area.
ODDS: 3-1
BRIGHTON (14-8)
Sometimes the Bulldogs are great. Sometimes they are not so good. And that happens in the same game. This group runs its offense well and gets off good shots. The frustrating thing is Brighton goes through stretches where it misses easy bunnies. Guard Mary Copple is an aggressive no-nonsense player who can destroy teams driving the lane just as easily as from the outside. Liv Lutz is a deadly shooter who needs more looks. Brighton is ranked eighth in the West.
ODDS: 5-1
HARTLAND (12-10)
The Eagles could win this district if they can get injured 6-foot-3 center Sarah Rekowski back in the lineup. Guard Liv Linden needs more help to make this a title contending team. Junior forward Aubree Meyer is strong and is good at creating her own shot. She must settle down a bit and make them.
ODDS: 15-1
MILFORD (11-11)
Teams know they are headed for a low scoring, slow-paced game whenever they face Milford. The Mustangs are led by junior Mira Kelley, who hit a big shot in last year’s District Finals against White Lake Lakeland.
The Mustangs lost that game which has motivated the girls to go one step further.
ODDS: 75-1
FENTON (12-9)
There are some nights where the Eagles light up the scoreboard. Then there are some nights where the lights go completely out. The guess here is Fenton loads up on inferior competition but cannot compete with more polished teams like Howell, who crushed Fenton 65-25 earlier in the season.
ODDS: 100-1
